"DRP not only reads and reports on the IIS metadata, but it will also create bat files to use in transferring your webs to a new IIS system."

- John Cesta

How does it work?

DomainReportIt PRO scans your IIs metabase and gathers info about your Webs. It uses this info to create a bat file which, when run, will create a new web site in a new IIS system.

The bat file is driven by our modified vbs script. We started with the mkw3site.vbs script which is included with IIS. It is used to create Web sites from the command line. However, mkw3site.vbs is lacking, in that: it does not create the application root. Yes, there is an additional vbs script called appcreate.vbs which creates the application root. But, there is an inherent problem with this script, in that: you must know the Web# in order to use it.

So, as you can see, only 1/4 of the automation is provided by Microsoft.

What we have done.

We have taken both scripts - mkw3site.vbs and appcreate.vbs - and incorporated them into one script. Using our version of these two scripts it is now possible to populate our script's command line and create not only the Web but the application root as well.

This is where DomainReportit PRO comes in.

Simply running DomainReportIt PRO will automatically create a bat file for each Web in your existing IIS system. You can then transfer these bat files to your new IIS install; run them using our spider program; each and every Web from your old system will be created on your new system.

What does the bat file look like?

createaweb.vbs -f -r d:\webroot\tallafriend -t "tell friend" -i 207.234.248.35 -o 80 -h www.tellafriendnetwork.com -b 207.234.248.35:80:www.tellafriendnetwork.com,
207.234.248.35:80:tellafriendnetwork.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
f = Creates Front Page Extensions
r = the web root
t = the server comment
i = the IP number
o = port number
h = the host header (if there is no host header, then 'h' will be cast aside. DomainReportit PRO can transfer up to 5 Server Bindings)

Also, you will have the bat files in the event of a catastrophic failure of your existing system.
A new IIS system can be created simply by running the bat files.

While creating the bat files you will be able
to CHANGE IP NUMBERS ON THE FLY!

By simply creating an ipmapping.ini file that looks like this:

[IP MAPPING]
204.234.345.33=198.123.188.3
234.184.130.44=198.123.188.4

You will be able to create your new Webs with new IPs!

How to use our domainreportitpro.ini file.

Set this variable to '1' if you want to not only print the DomainReportIt PRO report
but also create the bat files.

createWebBat=1

NOTE: The bat files will be created in 'c:\dscinc\domainreportitpro\webbats' directory.

If you want to convert your IP numbers while creating the bat files the set this
variable to '1'. In order to use this feature you must have a file called: ipmapping.ini and it must be in the: c:\dscinc\domaireportitpro\webbats directory.

useIPMappingFile=1

The file must be in the following format. If the IP address is not found, the original
IP will be used. If the IP is found but there is no IP on the right side
of the = sign, then the original IP will be used as well.

[IP MAPPING]
204.234.345.33=198.123.188.3
234.184.130.44=198.123.188.4

What else can I do with DomainReportIt PRO?

You can easily set up a Web page front end, gather the required info from the user, and populate
our script. Then, simply run the bat file to create Webs automatically.

What DomainReportIt PRO does not do:

DomainReportIt PRO will not move any other data such as:

Virtual Directories
FTP
SMTP
SSL Bindings

Errors, or other problems that may occur.

If, while creating bat files, one of your ServerComments contains illegal characters (i.e., slash) the
program will warn you with an error 1077, and then a dialog box.
It will then continue creating the remaining bat files.
The offending Domain will be skipped. You will have the info you need to fix the comment and create bat files again.
The bat files may be created at anytime, and as many times as you'd like.

Our continued efforts.

We are working very diligently towards moving other info over during the transfer.
At this time we feel that DomainReportIt PRO handles the bulk of the work of transferring an IIS installation.

DomainReportIt PRO is a simple yet powerful script. Please read the documentation we provide. We are sure (hope) that all your questions will be answered in these doc files.
